Mythological? The Behemoth

Look at the behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. What strength he has in his loins, what power in the muscles of his belly! His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are close-knit. His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like rods of iron. He ranks first among the works of God, yet his Maker can approach him with his sword. The hills bring him their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby. Under the lotus plants he lies, hidden among the reeds in the marsh. The lotuses conceal him in their shadow; the poplars by the stream surround him. When the river rages, he is not alarmed; he is secure, though the Jordan should surge against his mouth. Can anyone capture him by the eyes, or trap him and pierce his nose?
Job 40:15-24 NIV

What is behemoth? The NIV footnotes say this: "Possibly the hippopotamus or the elephant" and I say this: "Have you seen the tail of a hippo or and elephant?"
His tail sways like a cedar Well, do you remember my post about the cedar tree? Those huge trees that live to be 2,000 years old? Yes, those. These big trees. You agree with me, right? Cedars are big! And I know you're dying to see a hippo tail, you know...just so we can see how much a hippo tail looks like a cedar tree. How many of you have seen a hippo tail?
Well, now you all have. That puny scrawny little thing!
That doesn't look like a cedar either.
(Cartoon by Answers in Genesis)
This is what these two would have to look like to be a behemoth.
I think behemoth is a dragon! Because dragons are dinosaurs. (the word dinosaur wasn't inverted until the 1800s) I can give you all the evidence in the world, but believing it takes faith. The bible is God's word, and you'll be better off if you believe it.

Now faith is the assurance of
things hoped for, the conviction
of things not seen. Hebrew 11:1 ESV

  1. Haha! Love this! I agree, Hippo's don't have cedar tails. And even if they did, it does not make sense to say that an elephant or a hippo is behemoth. The passage talked about how hard it is to catch one. People were catching and taming elephants at the time God said this to Job!

Great post! And out of curiosity, are you making "Mythological?" a series of posts? I would love to see your thoughts on Leviathan!

  2. Hey Kaycee! I am doing a mythological series, I'm doing dragons, leviathan, and unicorns. (Behemoth was part of my dragon post). I'm glad you enjoyed my post! And that's a great point about taming elephants, I did not think of that!
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  3. Sweeet! Totally looking forward to this! Hey, could you do me a favor? For Leviathan, could you research Sarcosuchus, also known as the super croc, for me? I think it might be Leviathan, but I'd love to see what you think!

Can't wait for your next post!

  4. Sure! I'm glad you told me about the super croc, because I didn't know there was a leviathan-like animal that had been found.
    Dragons rock!
