The Unfamiliar Judges: Othniel

The Judges who aren't well known usually don't have much written about them, but I think that they should be known. I'll admit that Othniel really doesn't have a lot written about him, but I don't think he should be left in the dust. The judges show how God is full of anger and love.

The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD; they forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs. The anger of the LORD burned against Israel so that he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim, to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years. But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, so that he became Israel's judge and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him. So the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died.
Judges 3:7-11

God was burned with anger, but the cry of anguish got to him. Even when we make him burn with rage, he still love us. When we pray God answers. In this case, he used Othniel, who was Caleb's little brother. Caleb got to lead Isreal and God gave Othniel a chance to lead Israel too.
I have been focusing a lot on God's wrath. I think that The plagues of Egypt and the Judges of Israel are both great displays of how God burns with rage and is abounding in love. All at the same time. And of course it a righteous anger. There are so many stories that I could go through that prove God is an angry God. This is solid evidence that you would use in court. My Love V.S. Wrath Series was about what people said. Solomon says that God has anger and then Judges proves God has anger. At some later date, I may talk about the more popular judges, but I think it's important for everyone to know about the lesser of the judges. And by lesser, I mean less know or written about. If someone had taken the time to write more about what Othniel had done, then he would have been more famous, but because no one took the time, or we don't have the documents that have greater detail, Othniel is stuck as one on the unknown Judges.
